Understanding Dementia

At Autumn House, we specialise in caring for people with dementia. Expert on-site care allows us to ensure that our residents are comfortable and safe whether their diagnosis is recent or the condition has progressed significantly.

We aim to provide each of our patients with a comfortable and safe environment where their physical and mental needs are met. As far as possible, we want our residents to be able to continue their social lives, leading a fulfilling and rewarding life while they live with us.

Personalised care

Everyone is different, and creating a space where they feel at home, safe and secure requires individual attention. Most of our residents are active participants in their own care, discussing their options with our staff, making choices and planning out their days. However, we recognise that for some residents, this is not possible and in these cases we offer a higher level of attention and care.

We develop an individual care plan for each resident, which is reviewed every three months, allowing us to provide consistent and supportive care. We strive to maintain each resident’s independence and dignity while also providing the higher levels of care and attention that their condition requires, working with doctors and external experts to ensure that we continue to provide appropriate care throughout the progression of the condition.

On-site therapies

In addition to the medical treatments agreed with each resident’s doctor, we offer a range of additional therapies at Autumn House. These include physical therapies to maintain movement and flexibility, as well as touch therapies and massage.

These therapies provide particular benefit to people with dementia. Massage in particular has been recognised as a soothing and relaxing treatment for many dementia patients while also providing physical benefits to the skin and muscles.

Accommodation

Autumn House has been specially adapted to allow our residents with dementia or other particular needs independence and personal choice without compromising their safety. A simple example is that we provide a lift for residents, rather than stairs, reducing the risk of trips or falls.

While we strive to provide all our residents with a full and rounded life, maintaining their individual interests and freedoms we recognise that, for their own safety, some of our residents require greater supervision which may limit their independence. We ask all residents and visitors to respect their needs.
